Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley is expanding access to affordable homeownership in San Jose by giving new life to a piece of the city’s past. At 4th and Reed, a restored 1910 apartment building now stands as both a home and a symbol of preservation. Rather than see it demolished, Habitat partnered with the Preservation Action Council of San Jose to relocate the entire building from down the block, turning a threatened structure into new opportunity.
The project preserves an important piece of San Jose’s architectural heritage while creating affordable ownership opportunities for local families. What once faced demolition is now filled with new beginnings.
In late March, homeowners, volunteers, Habitat staff, and state and local officials gathered for a joyful backyard ceremony to celebrate the completion. We just wrapped a video that captures the building’s history and the community effort that made the transformation possible.
